west slope residence

Located in a part of southwest Portland surrounded by groves of mature Douglas Fir, the owners of a large home undergoing construction wanted their site to blend into the surrounding landscape. Modifications to the residence exterior along with a planting plan emphasizing native flora accomplished this goal.

A color scheme for the home of muted gray green accented by areas of natural cedar creates a complimentary backdrop for the more vivid green leaves and seasonal bright flowers of the native shrubs, perennials, and understory trees. These are intermixed with domesticated woodland plantings such as anemone, hosta, and helleborus. The vertical supports of the porches fronting the house are cladded with vertical cedar siding detailed to evoke classical fluted columns with a modern inflection and left natural to reflect the landscape.
